 First some background information:
Did you know The American Heart Association
was founded in 1924, it is  the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke.  To help prevent, treat and defeat these diseases — America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers — we fund cutting-edge research, conduct lifesaving public and professional educational programs, and advocate to protect public health.  To learn more or join us in helping all Americans, call 1-800-AHA-USA1 or visit americanheart.org. The Heart-Check Mark
The American Heart Association established the heart-check mark in 1995 to give consumers an easy, reliable system for identifying heart-healthy foods as a first step in building a sensible eating plan. About 800 products that bear the heart-check mark have been screened and verified by the association to meet criteria for saturated fat and cholesterol. To learn more about the heart-check mark, and to see a complete list of certified products and participating companies, visit heartcheckmark.org.

American Heart Association Food Certification Program Facts:
The American Heart Association’s Food Certification Program began in 1995 in response to consumer requests for reliable ways to identify foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Today, more than 800 heart-healthy food items bear the red and white heart-check mark on packaging. The American Heart Association has three categories of certification:
Standard Certification: Products must meet criteria for being low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
Whole-Grains Certification: Products must meet criteria for being low in saturated fat and cholesterol plus meet criteria for being high in whole grains and fiber
Whole-Oats from Soluble Fiber: Products must meet criteria for being low in saturated fat and cholesterol (Must have 0.75 g or more whole-oat soluble fiber and must contain beta-glucan from oat bran, rolled oats, whole-oat flour, or oatrim)

Using the heart-check mark to identify foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol is an important first step to achieving an overall healthy dietary pattern.

A complete list of certified products and participating companies is available at heartcheckmark.org. The site also features a free, interactive grocery list builder. Shoppers can save time by using the tool to select from their favorite certified foods as well as add needed household items before they go to the grocery store.   This is a great certification Dr. Tranquility.com highly recommend it. Visit us on DrTranquility.com for much more information!

Heart Health and the Mediterranean Way
By Dr. Suse Eisen ,DC
As I write this article, the Natural Products Expo West is about to start in Anaheim, California and that means food and more food.  I have kept a close eye on the agricultural current events of this week which has included a number of food recalls and the diagnostic reality that the South has been dubbed the “Diabetic” as well as the “Stroke” belt by the CDC in Atlanta. There is no confusing the fact that the Standard American Diet (SAD) is to blame for that milestone but we must add that it is the standard American diet augmented by an overuse of sugar, high fructose corn syrup and saturated fats to great excess in our southern neighbors that has brought them to this pass.As a college student in Georgia, one of the states named, I can tell you that Arby’s, McDonald’s and KFC ruled. But beyond that, almost every restaurant dished up supersized servings of chicken fried steak, biscuits and fatty gravy, and eggs, eggs, eggs. Add to that baby back ribs and huge helpings of mashed potatoes and bacon and you can start to see the problem.

The American Heart Association has released its newest certified foods list and as recently as yesterday has recommended that the Mediterranean Diet is good for heart health. This lists whole grains, olive oils and other good fats along with fish, chicken and large helpings of fruits and vegetables all washed down with a little good red wine. All of this is a great prescription for heart health and can also go a long way toward reducing that diabetes risk we spoke about, but like everything in life, it is never that simple.

There are many obstacles to surmount both in and out of the control of the American consumer. The first obstacle obviously is our will. Do we really want to eat this way, never to be able to enjoy another fatty serving of fried chicken or ice cream? It takes great will to make this change. The next great obstacle is one that is not always so easy to surmount. It involves the eating of genetically modified foods which is affecting that way we eat without our knowledge or belief in some cases and without a full comprehension by many. You go to the store and you have two options these days: Conventional and Organic. Actually, let’s make that three choices: Organic, Local, and Conventional - that is if you are lucky enough to shop in a store that carries organic. Sadly, many if not most conventional foods may be genetically modified and contain large amounts of pesticides which cannot be washed off.

Many of my patients come to me wanting to lose weight and get healthier.  For example, they may tell me that they had added salad which may consist of limited amounts of lettuce and tomatoes topped with chicken breast and may or may not contain a salad dressing. Patients do not always reveal all pertinent information. The point is eating healthy is a hard and unhappy reality for most people. I want to tell you that eating healthy doesn’t have to be hard or unhappy. There are many healthy and tasty food choices out there. But you must know that the best way to drop 25-30 pounds (or more if needed) and reverse heart disease and stroke risk is to do what Bill Clinton did. Whether or not you like him or his politics, he is an elder statesman and most of us know who he is.  Most of you may also be are aware that he underwent a battery of cardiac procedures including angioplasties, bypass surgery and a laundry list of pharmaceuticals for his heart disease.
One day, his daughter who was quietly taking public health courses at Columbia University, chastised her parents for their long and largely ignorant support of genetically modified foods and its effect on their own health. But let’s not get political here. Chelsea was getting married and she wanted her parents to “look good” for her wedding. She immediately put them on a reduced gluten intake along with a diet of high in organic produce. That means no fast foods – a sore trial for Bill – since I am sure we can all remember his secret service assisted jogs around Washington DC followed by a celebratory stop to McDonald’s. Within a short time, her father lost 25-30 pounds and started to reverse his heart disease.
To understand how we got here, big agricultural corporations who want to save every penny possible are heavily invested in genetically modified foods which they tell us is good for us and will increase crop yields. Neither is true and in fact fooling around with Mother Nature has actually created an epidemic of fat bellied bloated and gassy Americans who are unable to properly digest their foods due to a dietary intake that is no longer recognized by their bodies. Part of this process includes a reduction in the biodiversity that was once commonplace in agriculture. For example, wheat which once had 23 different varieties now consists of 5. Because of this, the gluten levels have steadily risen and have created an increase in allergies or sensitivity to wheat along the way. The best way to combat these sensitivities is to eat a gluten free bread and a terrific brand which I have personally taste tested in my kitchen and with my family young and old is French Meadow Bakery. They do gluten free better than any other brand I have tried and try to include organic ingredients as much as possible.
The Mediterranean style diet with a strong organic component is the best way to incorporate the American Heart Association’s recommendations along with tasty nutritionally dense food. This is the best way to improve your heart health and lose weight while gaining back control of your overall health.
Dr.Tranquility also recommends: On drtranquility.com we always recommendgreat tasting Gluten free foods. One of my favorites, and DR. Susan's as you all know by now French Meadow Bakery's gluten free Pizza and tortilla.

Try the gluten free pizza, add some fresh organic tomatoes(when we say organic it is important to note that many products have been grown with organic standards and methodologies but have not been utilizing this process long enough to utilize the organic seal). Moving on you may slice of a few pieces and place on top of crust. My favorite way(must be all of those courses in Tuscany I took), puree and place in sauce pan with some caramelized, onion and garlic, spread over  crust and top with fresh  Peccorino Romano place in oven for
3 minutes or until cheese has melted...YUMMY!
PSST again here for kid's try fun shaped mini-pizza's

Chop some fresh cilantro, avocado. Toast your Fresh Meadow Bakery gluten free tortilla and cut into shapes you like for kid's you may want to use a cookie cutter to cut shapes before toasting in oven on a cookie sheet.Add above ingredients and top with your favorite fresh cheese..awesome!
