This month we sat down to chat with our resident Cardiovascular surgeon and Co-Editor in chief of DrTranquility.com Today's Health Dr.Fred to get his feed back on some the amazing new research on heart stem cells.

According to the National Institute for Health Resource For Stem Cell Research in an article they published entitled...
"Can Stem Cells Repair a Damaged Heart?"

Heart attacks and congestive heart failure remain among the Nation's most prominent health challenges despite many breakthroughs in cardiovascular medicine. In fact, despite successful approaches to prevent or limit cardiovascular disease, the restoration of function to the damaged heart remains a formidable challenge. Recent research is providing early evidence that adult and embryonic stem cells may be able to replace damaged heart muscle cells and establish new blood vessels to supply them.
Discussed here are some of the recent discoveries that feature stem cell replacement and muscle regeneration strategies for repairing the damaged heart.Researchers now know that under highly specific growth conditions in laboratory culture dishes, stem cells can be coaxed into developing as new cardiomyocytes and vascular endothelial cells. Scientists are interested in exploiting this ability to provide replacement tissue for the damaged heart. This approach has immense advantages over heart transplant, particularly in light of the paucity of donor hearts available to meet current transplantation needs. (http://www.nih.gov/)
Dr Vagnini feels the new research being conducted today is both exciting and promising!

In the early days of Anti-Aging Medicine treatment centered around HRT and eventually a movement of progressive prevention to stop the complication of degenerative disease there by helping people to life longer lives.
More recently however regenerative medicine such as Telomere Biology centers on Stem Cell Therapy report the use of stem cells in heart disease reflects a new and growing trend of the future.

Next up from or Q&A email bag... We received a number of emails from concerned patients are about to undergo surgery. The questions addressing new awareness and concern, and a stronger desire for participation, information and in the selection of their anesthesiologist, in the wake of Michael Jackson's untimely passing.
We are posting some of the most commonly asked questions and as I/DrTranquility always say on DrTranquility.com if I don't know the answer I will ask someone who does...
Well I did just that!

I went to my buddy Dr. Artis Woodward MD

First a little background:

Dr. Artis Woodward, named Outstanding Doctor of the year 2000, has been specializing in Anesthesiology with a focus on Pain Management for well over twenty years. This sought after physician has served as Chief of Anesthesia at a number of respected medical institutions in Southern California. Thanks largely to Dr. Woodward's medical management, guidance and support over a number of years at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Community Hospital, his division was named Outstanding Department.

What What should we look for in our Anesthesiologist?

Dr. W : Get to know the anesthesiologist assigned to your surgery as soon as your informed by your surgeon that you must undergo a procedure by asking these key questions:

Who has been rotated/scheduled as the anesthesiologist on my surgery?
How well do they know this practitioner?
Their background and "track record"
Ask the surgeon if the have experienced any emergency situations when they work with this anesthesiologist previously?
Very importantHow did the practitioner handle themselves during this procedure?

Dr. Artis Woodward's Tips

Dr. Artis stresses that rapport and the Dr/patient relationship in this situation are key factors!

"A good rapport helps the patient get into their comfort zone diminishing anxiety."

This is so important because anxiety can lead to visceral problems such as PVC, and hyperactive states such as asthma and many other conditions.

PS another important note for smoking parent patients...you must stop smoking at least 10 days prior to your surgical day!

I have had tremendous success as part of Mind-Body protocols I offer in my practice with smoking cessation, through in office sessions an video/tele-sessions with personalized protocols. So shoot me an emailhttp://www.drtranquility.com/I am only too happy to help!

"Be honest with your anesthesiologist about your habits, smoking, drinking, eating, medical conditions. This is not the time to hold back information...remember an informed practitioner is always a better one!"
